Islander Girls Soccer ...

Senior starter Riley McGrath works the ball down the field during last week’s home opener versus Monte Vista. The Islanders Girls Soccer team posted an impressive 2-0 week to start the 2021’ campaign.

When a team opens its season, they always want to start on the right foot. Getting that first win can be so critical at setting the tempo of the upcoming season.

And for the Islanders Girls Soccer team it’s fair to say the start of their 2021 season was perfect, as the ladies in green and white posted an impressive 2-0 week to start the 2021’ campaign.

For the first match of the week, the Islanders hosted Monta Vista. It was a game that the Islanders dominated the entire way.

It would only take the Islanders 12 minutes to net an opening goal thanks to a fine through ball from Riley McGrath that would find the right foot of Delaney Nickerson who would chip the keeper to make it a 1-0 contest.

It would only be another 12 minutes until the Islanders would strike again. Islander speed demon Xiomara McKenna would fire in a long pass that would fall to Candence Palmer who would make quick work of the keeper to hammer home another goal and make it 2-0 Islanders.

The two goals would prove to be more than enough for the Islanders, as for the final 60 minutes of the contest the Islanders backline would simply suffocate any opportunities and counter strike attempts by Monta Vista.

Zoe Searles, Ava Worthy, and Alexis Hammond did a great job of controlling the wings and not allowing Monta Vista to send in crosses or have any real look at the goal, giving the Islanders the smooth 2-0 victory to open the season.

The Islanders would carry the momentum from the win into their match Thursday vs. Grossmont High.

While it was the defense that was the story Tuesday night, it was the Islander’s attack and offensive fire works that stole the show vs. Grossmont.

While it was only a 1-0 game at the half, it was the Islanders we’re just one goal away from breaking the game open. As in the first half alone, the Islanders recorded 6 shots on goal from the feet of McGrath, Mckenna, Ella Oden, and Worthy.

But in the second half, the Offensive explosion would arrive. In the opening 20 minutes of the second half, the Islanders would find the back of the net three times thanks to fine finishes from Nickerson, McKenna ( her second of the game, to go along with an assist ), and Rylie Brenden. Making 4-0 Islanders.

For good measure, McGrath would add one more goal to make it a 5-0 and seal the victory for the Islanders.

It was just how these Islanders expected to start the season, as with a returning core littered with extremely talented and skilled players the Islanders will no doubt contend as one of the best teams in the county yet again this season.

The Islanders will look to keep things rolling when they return to action Tuesday, Nov. 30 vs the Patriots of Christian High School.
