When last we checked on the Islander Softball Team, they won their First Round game against Mira Mesa and then lost their Winner’s bracket game to Central Union High School two days later. At that point, the CIF Division III Playoffs had turned into a double-elimination tournament, and the Islanders had to defeat Oceanside in their next game to stay alive in the tourney. Unfortunately Oceanside wore their hitting shoes to the game Tuesday played at Green Field in Coronado and emerged with a 17-6 victory. The Pirates pounded out 17 hits and benefitted from five Islander fielding errors to advance to the next round. The score was 7-0 in favor of Oceanside before the Islanders got to the plate at the bottom of the second inning. Oceanside scored in each of the five innings of the game.

The Islanders put the ball in play themselves, lashing out 10 hits. Jenna Roulan went 2-3 at the plate; Pita Lopez was 2-3 with two RBIs; single-hit games were turned in by Janessa Hudson, Laiken Warner, Kelly Murray, Courtney Williams, Marianne Akre and Anna Wong. Akre drove in two runs with her hit, and Wong’s hit was a two-run, no-doubt homer. Kylie Shaver and Hudson both drew walks in the contest.

The team that ended Coronado’s winning streak at 22 games, Central Union High School of El Centro, was the runner-up for the CIF Division III title, losing twice to Mission Bay. Islander Head Coach Jay Kruer and Assistant Coach Doug Barker attended the Finals last Saturday and Kruer remained impressed with Central Union, which lost the Championship Game 3-2 on a couple of long balls by the Buccaneers. Also, credit Central Union with six round trips by car and van to the San Diego area over an 11-day period to compete in the Playoffs.

With the season concluded, the Islander Softball Program held their awards banquet over the weekend. JV Head Coach Alexis Wright announced the awards for her team, which included: MVP-Natalie Gates; Coach’s Award-Sasha Wong; Offensive Player of the Year-Ila Pecus; Defensive Player of the Year-Emma Borgie; Most Improved Player-Ynez Kerley; and Team Captain-Grace Ritz. The JV’s record was 8-1 this year, and they were the City League Champions.

Coach Kruer announced the Varsity Awards, which were voted on by the players. The team as a whole had an unweighted grade point average of 3.43 and was named the Southwest San Diego County All-Academic Team. The Islander Scholar-Athlete was Lily Sawi with a 4.19 GPA. Awards were presented to Team Captains Sawi, Warner and Roulan; Team MVP-Roulan; Most Improved Amelia Hawley; Defensive Player of the Year-Lopez; Offensive Player of the Year-Hudson; and the Coaches/ISF Award went to Cassidy Zolla.

First Team All-City League recognition went to: Akre, Hudson, Lopez and Roulan. Second Team Honors went to Zolla and Williams. Lopez was named City League MVP.
