Islander Athletic Director Robin Nixon and I had a couple of Email exchanges last week, wherein she reminded me that registration is now open for the Fall sports of Girls Golf, Girls Tennis, Boys Water Polo, Girls Volleyball, Boys and Girls Cross Country and Football. First, go to www.islandersportsfoundation.com and click on the ‘More’ tab in the upper right-hand corner of the home page. Then select ‘Registration Instructions’ from the drop-down menu, and you’re on your way.
Nixon also said the latest information from the CIF, the governing body of high school sports in California, is the final decision regarding when or if fall sports will be played, will be announced July 20, 2020. At this point, apparently all scheduling options are on the table.
In other Islander sports news, this is the conclusion of the high school awards season, and three different organizations have recognized a total of six senior CHS athletes with honors. The Islander Athletic Department named the CHS Top Athletes from the Class of 2020, with Devin Schulte from Football and Lacrosse earning the Hal Niedermeyer Award and Crista Izuzquiza from Girls Golf earning the Bev Hinkle Award.
The San Diego High School Sports Association honored Kendall Chapko from Girls Lacrosse and Jake Hacker from Boys Basketball and Volleyball, as the CHS Scholar Athletes of the Year. Chapko graduated with a 4.41 weighted grade point average, and Hacker graduated with a 4.59 weighted GPA.
And the Islander Sports Foundation recently announced their Athletes of the Year, who exemplify the organization’s principles of Integrity, Sportsmanship and Friendship. Anna Hinz from Water Polo and Swimming earned the ISF honors for Girls sports and Grant Gould from the Islander Baseball program won for Boys Sports. They were both stars in the classroom as well, with Hines earning a 4.15 GPA, while Gould attained a 3.88 GPA.
