In my opinion, this is an achievement that deserves its own section and sub-headline. In the Friday evening game against Buchanan High School, Islander Head Coach Randy Burgess earned his 700th coaching victory. Burgess is in his 33rd season at the helm of Coronado High School’s Water Polo, leading the program from 1981-84 and 1987-2015.

Although the final story obviously hasn’t been written about his 2015 team, the Islander squads from 2000 and 2001 were considered his best, each winning acclaim as the best team in the country. Burgess also coached U.S. Olympians Layne Beaubien, Genai Kerr and Jesse Smith at CHS. His teams have also included 16 CIF San Diego Section Players of the Year.

Burgess said of the milestone, “In my mind, this benchmark is simply representative of coaching longevity. In my heart, it serves as a reminder of the warriors, the athletes in the program that made such a strong commitment to set out to achieve at their highest standards. For that I am very proud to have served as a catalyst.”

Congratulations to Burgess for reaching a tremendous coaching and teaching milestone.
