Islander Football Heads Into The Playoffs ...

Islander quarterback Hudson Herber will look to lead the Coronado High School football team into it’s quarterfinal CIF playoff game.

The Islanders are officially in playoff mode for Islanders Football. After a week of rest and tending to injuries, the Islanders watched and waited to see who they would be playing in the quarterfinals of the CIF DIV playoffs.

Coronado will be matching up vs. Sweetwater High School, a team that the Islanders already defeated at home this season by the score of 13-7 back in week two.

“We are going to get a very similar match-up this second time around” said Islanders head coach Kurt Hines. “Back when we played them in August, they only threw the ball a hand full of times, they were almost exclusively running the ball. And if their win last week they only threw the ball one time. So, we will really need our DE’s and LB’s to win at the line of scrimmage.”

In many ways Coronado’s defense would love a repeat of their last performance vs. Sweetwater to just 107 yards of total offense and even picked up a defensive touchdown. The blueprint is there, the Islanders just need to follow the plan.

On the offensive side of the ball, Coronado will look to stayed balanced. “Offensively we hope to be able to run the ball well and be able to move the line of scrimmage. In terms of our air attack, we will continue with our philosophy of throwing short to gain a lot. If we can stay mistake free and move the ball efficiently, we should be in very good shape.”

If I were to guess, I think Friday night will feature a heavy dosage of senior running back Zane Delcore. Delcore has done a ton for the 2021 Islanders, rushing for 102.1 YPG with a crisp 7.5 YPA and innate ability to seemly never go down on first contact and break weak arm tackles with regularity.

Not to mention the senior bell cow went for 70 yards and 4.0 YPC in the Islanders Prior Match Up with Sweetwater.

If the Islanders can get the ground game going, it will allow most likely open up the rest of the offense. Allowing QB Hudson Herber to find playmakers like Elias Valdivia, Donny Couts, Graham Bower and Connor Little to make plays on the outside.

…“It’s going to take a great team effort this Friday to come out with a win,” said Hines “We’re ready for the task ahead of us.”

It will be a massive game for the Islanders, a simple matter of survive and advance. Make sure to come out this Friday November 12th and cheer on the good guys in Green and White with a trip to the CIF Semifinals on the line.
