CJ Fodrey Off To Play For The Aztecs ...

Islander senior CJ Fodrey in action for CHS against University City High School in December of 2021. The Islander alum now moves on to SDSU where he will play soccer for the Aztecs.

In the San Diego Soccer scene, you will be hard-pressed to find a more impressive homegrown talent than Coronado local, CJ Fodrey.

For the past year and a half, the local Coronadan has been a member of the United Soccer League (USL) professional soccer team, the San Diego Loyal. In that time he has thrived as he learned from some of the best soccer professionals in the United States.

However, as of last week, Fodrey will be turning in his green and yellow Loyal uniform for that of a sleek black and red SDSU uniform. While CJ’s time with the Loyal is over (for now), it was an experience that has helped him develop tremendously over just a short period of time. “My time with the Loyal was unbelievable,” said Fodrey. “Playing with guys who were five to ten years older than me challenged me to get better every day and taught me so much,” he continued. “I feel like I definitely matured more playing with these guys, they showed me what it takes to be a pro and the discipline needed to succeed.”

Fodrey’s career is littered with accomplishments not only personally but for his club as well. Fodrey was the Loyal’s first Loyal Academy Player to appear in a match and score a goal. With many experiences and highlights in the last year, I asked Fodrey if there was a moment or two that stood out the most, to which he replied; “ I think for sure my first professional appearance in Louisville was very memorable for both my family and me. But most memorable would have to be my first goal at home versus Las Vegas. It was in front of so many families, friends, and old coaches and my best friend was on the other team. That moment was magical, it felt different.”

In his parting, the Loyal had their entire roster sign a Fodrey jersey, a nice acknowledgment to what was indeed a spectacular tenure with the team.

While one chapter of Fodrey’s soccer career comes to a close, another will soon begin. This fall, Fodrey will start his collegiate career at SDSU as a headliner for the number one recruiting/freshman class in the country.

“The coaching staff at SDSU is unmatched, they’re going to be great to play for,” explained Fodrey. “Plus, the recruiting class is so deep and how talented this team is, then add the fact that I’ll still be in San Diego, where I’ve grown up and played youth, club, USL and now college.” he continued. “And [I] hope to play here with an MLS (Major League Soccer) team if the city gets a franchise.”

Coming into his freshman year, CJ already has plenty of goals set for himself. A few of these goals include taking home the Pac-12 young player of the year, helping SDSU win a conference title, and keeping a top GPA in the classroom.

As for his role on the field with SDSU, Fodrey is confident that he will help make an impact this season. “This is a very talented team, and I know I have to earn this spot to start and play,” he said. “I’m just going to come in and do everything I can to work to earn a starting role, I want to help this team anyway I can.”

The SDSU men’s soccer team regular season will kick off on August 28 locally at the new Snapdragon Stadium. “I am super excited to play at Snapdragon and would love to see people from Coronado come out [to] support,” said Fodrey.
