If you were to look up home-court advantage in the dictionary, a picture of the Islanders Girls Volleyball Team at the Islander gym may come up after the team’s 3 sets to 1 victory over Clairemont.
In the opening set, the Islanders jumped out to an early 14-10 lead thanks to strong serving from Phina Bustos and several great kills from Maddie Ortiz and Emily Wygal. However, after some miscues by Coronado, they allowed Clairemont to climb back into the first set as it became a one-point 17-16 lead for the Islanders.
But the Islanders would quickly grow that lead back to three after an ace from Zoe Johnstad, a kill from Ortiz, and a nice block by Chloe Berk to make it a 20-17 in the first set.
However, Clairemont would proceed to go on a 10-3 scoring run, which was again aided by several Coronado miscues, to help the Chieftains steal the first set 27-24 from Coronado.
Despite dropping the first set, the Islanders remained focused. Coronado quickly jumped out to an early 12-8 advantage in the 2nd set thanks to numerous points won thanks to kills from Johnstad and Wygal.
Coronado would continue to grow their lead until they found themselves with a 19-10 lead in the second set. The Islanders would eventually close out the 2nd set at 25-14 and tie things up at 1 set apiece.
The Islanders would carry the momentum from their second set win into the third set, as they jumped out to an early 10-5 lead. A big reason for Coronado’s dominance was due to their serving and their ability to set up kills’.
One of the most notable examples came from freshman Emily Page, who not only went 6-0 on her service points but did a fantastic job of setting for her teammates. The Islanders would quickly grow their lead to 20-12 thanks to three straight kills from senior Sarah Alexander and two more from Wygal. Coronado would eventually close out the third set 25-16 to take the 2 sets to 1 lead.
In the fourth set, the Islanders would yet again jump out to an early lead, as they found themselves up 13-8 early thanks to a couple of aces from Marlie Meoni, and continued strong play at the net from Wygal, Berk, and Alexander.
The visiting Chieftains would mount a small comeback as they tied the fourth set at 14-14 after some Islander miscues. But the Islanders would quickly rebound, thanks to several aces from Meoni and Johnstad and a flurry of kills from Alexander that we assisted by strong sets by Page. Coronado would claim the 4th set 25-16, sealing their 3 sets to 1 victory over Clairemont.
The Islanders would lose their following game to Helix, but pick up another win later in the week vs. Mar Vista to post a successful 2-1 week.
The Islanders will return to action this week as they will host Foothills Christian Wednesday, Sept. 1, and then welcome Francis Parker to town this Friday, Sept. 3.
