The Islanders Girls Tennis team officially returned to action this past week. After one season of a mixed boys and girls’ team, the Islanders, and all of San Diego tennis, have returned to its traditional format.

With six seniors departing from last year’s team, this year’s Islander team will be more youthful and inexperienced at the varsity level than it has been in years past.

For their first matchup of the season, the Islanders made their way out to Otay Ranch High School to face off against the Mustangs. The Islanders jumped out to the early 5-4 lead thanks to their play in Singles.

“Our upperclassmen Ana de la Lama, Kate Perley, and Carolina Lebrija all played really well in their singles matches.” said 13th year Head Coach Rob Moore “Kate impressed me with how she battled through some arm pain and was still able to dominate her match.”

However, while the Islanders were able to control the singles line, it would be in doubles where the team would struggle. Coronado would go 3-6 in the double’s lines. Which would cost them the match vs. the Mustangs. “We’re a young team,” said Coach Moore, “So there will be some struggles, but they will learn a lot from them and get better.”

While the Islanders struggled a bit in their first match of the season. The same could not be said for the Islander’s second match of the week, as the Islanders would take home the 18-0 victory over Hilltop High School.

“The girls played much better in the second match of the week.”  said Moore “I don’t think we even lost a game in the doubles line, which I don’t know if that has ever happened while I’ve coached.”

Some standouts from the Hilltop Matches were doubles pairs were Jade Summers-Evans & Lilly Adams, Nikki O’Malley & Hana Araujo, and Bia Faria & Cailey Morris. All three of these pairs easily cruised to 6-0 wins.“The doubles pairings played very well.  They were more focused, worked together and had fun competing.”  Said Moore.

With the first matches of the season now completed and their record at 1-1, the Islanders are now gearing up for the upcoming matches this week as they will face off against San Dieguito this Wednesday, September 8th.
