Two long-time rivals of Coronado in Girls Lacrosse were on the schedule last week. The Islanders romped over Rancho Bernardo 19-3 to begin the week’s play and three nights later Coronado lost at La Jolla 14-6. The Islanders record is 7-3 on the season.

“The Rancho Bernardo game was great because everybody got in and played,” said Islander Head Coach Kirstyn Atkinson. “Our La Jolla game was 1-1 just 15 minutes into the game and we were doing really well. It’s the same story, different day when we are playing Top Five teams. It’s a mentality for us and something we have to get past. It doesn’t have to do with talent or skill level. We can compete with these teams, but we have to be mentally tough when we’re in a tight game and then finish it out. We are working toward a competitive mentality to carry through the rest of the year. Our schedule is still loaded with tough teams, but we’re excited for it.”

The details of the Rancho Bernardo game included the Broncos scoring the first two goals of the game, Coronado scored the next 19 straight, and the Broncos scored the final goal of the contest. Scoring for Coronado included Allie White with four goals; three goals each came from Kat Green, Camden DeMaio and Catie Ward; two goals were scored by Ella Ackerly; and single goals from Makenna Armstrong, Mallory Morrissey, Ryan Brophy and Abby Fabiszak. Assists were credited to Lily Roughneen, Armstrong and White. Kendall Chapko had three saves in goal. White was the groundball leader with five, DeMaio and Green had four groundballs recovered each.

In the La Jolla game, Coronado scored first, but the opening goal from Ward was followed by seven tallies by the Vikings. A goal scored by Green interrupted La Jolla’s scoring skein, but the Vikings strung seven consecutive goals together to put the game out of reach. DeMaio and Ward scored two goals each, plus Morrisey and Green scored one goal each. Chapko had eight saves in the game.

This week Coronado hosted Westview Monday and prevailed 15-5 to run their record to 8-3. We’ll have details of that game in next week’s column. Friday the team travels to Scripps Ranch for a game that starts at 7 p.m.
