It’s a relatively small sample size, just five matches, but the Islander Girls Golf Team, under the direction of Stuart Gordon, is currently ranked No. 8 in San Diego County. Gordon’s mixture of four upperclassmen including Crista Izuzquiza, Samantha Lorr, Annie Holland and Madeline Dietrick combined with six freshmen is working in the early going.

Leading the way for the Islanders is Izuzquiza, who in her three matches played this season, is shooting under par when her scores are totaled. Her three rounds, all played at Coronado Municipal (Par 36) are 37, 36 and 34. She is among a small handful of elite golfers in San Diego.

Last week the Islanders played two matches at home including a 238-241 win over Torrey Pines and a 254-295 win over Morse. In the first match, Izuzquiza came in at even par, Lorr shot a 44, Annie Holland shot a 48, and freshmen twins Natalia Avanni shot a 53 and Mariella Avanni shot a 57. Sophie Holland, Annie’s freshman sister competed in the match, but her score wasn’t used.

Against Morse, Izuzquiza fired her two-under par round of 34, Annie Holland shot a 50, Natalia Avanni lowered her score to 48, Mariella Avanni lowered hers to a 53, with Tatum Ware and Morgan Arendt completing the field for Coronado.

This week the Islanders play Francis Parker at Riverwalk Monday, Wednesday they play Cathedral Catholic at Riverwalk, and Thursday Coronado competes against Point Loma at Mission Bay.
