Last week the Islander Girls Golf Team began their week with a 215-280 win over La Jolla High School in a match played at the Coronado Municipal Golf Course. Mary Damian was the medalist for Coronado with a 37, followed by 41 for Samantha Lorr, a 42 from Annie Holland, a 47 from Mariella Avanni and a 48 from Natalia Avanni.

Two days later, Coronado traveled to the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, the home course of CHS Head Golf Coach Stuart Gordon to face Scripps Ranch. Although the team combined to shoot a fine round of 211, the Falcons shot a great round of 189 to claim the victory. Crista Izuzquiza shot a round of 35, with Damian coming in at 43, Lorr at 41, Holland shot a 45, and both Avanni sisters shot rounds of 47.

Thursday, Torrey Pines was looking for revenge for a loss the Islanders hung on them early in the season and they shot a 199 to Coronado’s 283. Playing a very tough Rancho Santa Fe Course she had never played on before, Izuzquiza shot a 39, which was one over par, with Damian shooting a 42. Coach Gordon had trouble filling out his playing roster as several of the players had school commitments that day.

This is the final week of the regular season, with the Islanders traveling to Riverwalk Tuesday to face the Academy of Our Lady of Peace; Wednesday they play Rancho Bernardo at the Bernardo Heights Country Club; and Thursday they host Mater Dei at Coronado Municipal.

Wednesday Oct. 23, the City Conference Championships will begin, and six Islanders will compete, including the defending champion Izuzquiza, the defending runner-up Damian, Lorr, Holland and the Avanni sisters. The first round of the City Conference event is stroke play, with the Top 16 golfers qualifying for Match Play the following day. The first two days will be played at the Balboa Golf Course. Starting Wednesday through the conclusion of the event, the matches will be played at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo.

The CIF Team Playoffs begin Tuesday, Oct. 29, with the likely opposition to be supplied by Cathedral Catholic and Maranatha Christian. Coronado is favored to emerge from the play-in round to compete in the San Diego CIF event, which will be held the following Monday and Wednesday, Nov. 4 and 6.
