One clear sign the beginning of the 2019-20 School Year is rapidly approaching is the official start of the Islander Boys Water Polo Season is just a couple of weeks away. Practice begins Aug. 5, and although the first day of class isn’t until Thursday, Aug. 22, the days are speeding by.

According to Islander Head Coach Sean Castillo, this wasn’t an international travel summer for the Coronado Aquatics Club under the direction of Club Head Coach Randy Burgess, which is the off-season home for the Islander Water Polo Team.

“There was a pretty big group of kids who went to the Naval Academy for a week or so to do water polo camps, and training with some local club guys,” Castillo said. “Then they returned home and played in a couple of tournaments including the California State Games and a smaller high school tournament. And then we had the Polo in Paradise Camp in Coronado a couple of weeks ago.”

The Islanders return four seniors from last year’s club in Calvin Peckham, Carlos Morales, Hill Bosworth and Rhonin Bernard. Teddy Oliver, one of the best goalies in the CIF San Diego Section is now a junior, as are Peter Olson and Matthew Wastila who saw considerable playing time last season.

The Islanders will again compete in the league nobody else wants to join due to the level of competition, the Western League, along with La Jolla, Cathedral Catholic and The Bishop’s School. University City, which was in the circuit last year, has returned to the Eastern League. The net result is Coronado will have two more games on their schedule to play against tougher competition. Castillo said of the 2019 schedule, “We’ll get a couple of more games at home against Division I teams. La Jolla should be pretty good. They had a lot of young kids last year, and Cathedral and Bishop’s always add new kids.”

On a related note, Tommy Corcoran (CHS ’04) has been named Head Coach at Cathedral Catholic. Castillo and Corcoran played together for two years under Burgess at CHS, and against each other in college. Corcoran competed for USC and Castillo played at UC Santa Barbara. Castillo added, “When Tommy got the job, I sent him a text and said ‘Congrats.’ But now you’re Public Enemy No. 1.”

Corcoran, who was on the USC NCAA National Championship Team in 2005, earned All-American and All-NCAA honors from 2005-07. He served recently as both the Boys and Girls Water Polo Head Coach at Saint Ignatius High School in the Bay Area.

Castillo added, “Anyone interested in playing water polo can still come out. Practice starts Aug. 5, but we will take players up to the first day of school, Aug. 22. Contact Athletic Director Robin Nixon at the high school and she’ll point you in the right direction. Or go on the Islander Sports Foundation website to get the practice times and the physical forms. “

Coronado will begin the season with three scrimmages, including the Coach Draz Classic Aug. 10, at Foothill Aug. 15 and at home Saturday, Aug. 24 against Esperanza. The regular season starts with a home game Wednesday, Sept. 4 against Canyon Crest Academy. Saturday, Sept. 7, the team will travel to Newport Harbor for an 11 a.m. contest.
