Islander Boys Water Polo ...

Islander water polo player Andrew Bear looks for an opening during last week’s home game loss versus Grossmont.

The Islander Boys Water Polo team took on the Foothillers of Grossmont High last Thursday, Oct. 7, in a non-conference match at the Brian Belt Memorial Complex. It was a fast start for the Islanders with Jack Hilinski firing a goal from center on the very first possession of the game. A tremendous block by Anthony Aiello kept Grossmont at bay early in the first period, however, the Foothillers were able to get into an offensive groove despite a steal by Aiello and a great save by goalie Sebastian Palomera. Grossmont led 4-1 at the end of the first period.

The second period belonged to the Foothillers as their patient teamwork paid off with 7 unanswered goals to take a commanding 11-1 lead at the mid-way point of the match. Palomera ended Coronado’s scoring drought with a skip shot past the goalie early in the third. Hilinski found the corner of the net and Max Ramey muscled a score from the inside to make the tally 14-3 after three periods.

Coronado found their offensive and defensive rhythm in the final period. Blake Bergener scored on the opening possession followed by another inside flip by Ramey. Luke Matchin stole a pass, picking it off in midair starting a fast break where Bergener scored to make it 15-6. Robert Valencia netted a late goal from the right side and Bergener added another score, but it was too little, too late for the Islanders as they dropped the match 15-8.

The team stands at 8-8 on the season with City League play starting this week with home games on Tuesday, Oct. 12, versus La Jolla, score unavailable at press time, and Thursday, Oct. 14, versus Bishops. Swim-off for both matches is at 4 p.m.
