It’s been a good year for the Islander Boys Volleyball Team (22-14 overall, 4-4 in the Eastern League) under the direction of Head Coach George Cavaco. The team concluded their regular season with a straight-set victory over Clairemont by the scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 28-26. Cavaco said of the scores, “We played everybody, and the final set was close. Brayden Austin played well and then he sprained his ankle. Griffin Book, Danny Hopkins and Evan Grim all played really well this season. One of the reasons we were so much better this season is seniors like Jared Viola who played well all season long. We finished third in the Eastern League behind St. Augustine and Scripps Ranch.”

Their strong regular season record earned Coronado the No. 7 seed in CIF Division II, and they were scheduled to host Helix Tuesday evening. Coach Cavaco said, “We just played them in the Scripps Ranch Tournament and beat them two games to none. They’ll make some changes and we will too. We played a lot of good teams this past season. We won the most games we have won. I had my 100th coaching victory over Hoover earlier this season.”

Should the seeding hold and No. 7 Coronado defeats No. 10 Helix, the Islanders will travel to play No. 2 seed Classical Academy Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. According to Cavaco, the match will likely be played at Orange Glen High School, as Classical Academy doesn’t have a facility to host the event.
