The Islander Boys Tennis Team (5-9 overall, 4-5 Western League) played three matches last week, winning two. Their week began with an 18-0 win over Point Loma, followed by an 11-7 win over Francis Parker, and a close 11-7 loss to La Jolla. “We had a decent week,” said Islander Head Coach Mackenzie White. “The last time we played La Jolla we lost 16-2. We had our best lineup on the court and our No. 2 singles player that day got ill. If he had been healthy, we might have won, but we had a good showing. And we had a nice win over Francis Parker.”

The winning lineup against Point Loma included a singles roster of No. 1 Ryan Wood, No. 2 Jorge Yanez and No. 3 Isaac Del Rincon. The doubles order was No. 1 Jake Lamb/Andres de la Lama; No. 2 Nathaniel Nelson/Mauricio Rivero and No. 3 Chris Fisher/Alan Corrales for the first two sets and Fisher/Nicolas Rios for the third set. “Everybody crushed it at Point Loma,” White said. “Chris and Alan had a couple of close sets, but they pulled them out.”

Coronado plays St. Augustine Tuesday for their final regular season match. The team has next week off except for practice sessions and the CIF Team competition starts the following Tuesday. White noted, “It looks like we’re going to be in Division I for the Playoffs, and right now we’re behind La Jolla, St. Augustine and Scripps Ranch, so we’re probably a No. 4 or No. 5 seed. There are 16 teams in Division I and we’re waiting to see what will happen.”
