Over the past 10 days, the Islander Boys Lacrosse Team played games Friday April 26, Monday April 29, Wednesday May 1, and Friday May 3. In order, they defeated Scripps Ranch 10-2; lost to La Costa Canyon 14-5; defeated St. Augustine 14-8; and lost to Torrey Pines 19-2. Reviewing those scores, it is pretty easy to figure out that the Falcons are the No. 1 seed in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division Playoffs and the LCC Mavericks are the No. 3 seed. Coronado emerged as the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 seed Santa Fe Christian, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening, May 11 in the Open Division Quarter-Finals, a game that will be played at Niedermeyer Field. Santa Fe Christian requested an earlier start time for the game, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. At press time, the revised starting time was still being confirmed.

In the St. Augustine contest, a total of eight Islanders scored goals, led by James Witthoft with four goals on just five shot attempts, and an assist. Other goal scorers included Daniel Bell with three; two goals were scored by Casey Harris; and single goals were scored by Miguel Serrano, Devin Schulte, Neil Capin who also had two assists, Reese Packard who also was credited with an assist, and Alex Arvizu. Dominic Friedly recovered nine ground balls, with four each recovered by Witthoft and Andrew Bell, and Schulte recovered three grounders. Joe Walsh was in goal and had seven saves. Friedly had a great game in another department, winning 19 of the 22 faces off he took for Coronado.

Islander Head Coach Alex Cade previewed the Coronado vs. Santa Fe Christian game. “They’re in a different league than we are, and we don’t typically play them. It will be an evenly-matched game. I think they are really patient with the ball on offense and are solid on defense.”

Cade also provided his thoughts on the regular season which just concluded. “I was proud of the Boys, earning the No. 4 seed in the Open Division, which is not easy to do in San Diego. There are good teams that play good lacrosse here. We didn’t duck anyone, and we battled the big guys. Because of that, we are going into the Playoffs with a breadth of experience. We won and lost close games, we played injured and healthy, and we have gone through every scenario. I hope the Boys are proud of our seed also, but we have a lot more work to do. Last week was a physical week and we played against good opponents, which is challenging. We don’t have any games this week, so we should get healthy and a little fresher. We’ll continue to work to get better.”
