The Islander Baseball Team, under the direction of Head Coach Morgan Cummins, won the CIF Division III title last season and their reward was elevation to both the competitive Eastern League from the City League and up a level to CIF Division II. The Islanders held their own, ending the season with an overall record of 16-14-1 and 4-8 in the Eastern League.

Coronado was the No. 11 seed of the 12 teams that qualified for the Division II playoffs this season. That meant the Islanders had to win their play-in game against No. 6 seed Bonita Vista on the road to reach the double-elimination portion of the tournament. However, the Barons defeated the Islanders 7-3, which concluded Coronado’s season. The score was tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, so the game was closer than the final score might indicate.

“Jared Pratt doubled off the wall to start the game,” Cummins said. “Heath Miller laid down a perfect bunt for a single and Jared went to third. Then Tobey Brown hit a one-hop line drive they turned into a double play, but Pratt scored. A few feet either to the right or the left and we might have had a big inning, not just one run.”

Bonita Vista countered with three runs in the bottom of the first, while Coronado battled back with a run in each of the third and fourth innings. Cummins said of the third inning, “Evan Schnell reached on an error, Pratt singled to right field and got caught in a rundown, which allowed Schnell to score on a throwing error. As the play continued, Pratt was thrown out at third. In the top of the fourth, Dylan Miller singled to center, Bobby Zajonc walked, and Ryan Ward laid down a really good bunt. We had the bases loaded with nobody out. After a pop out, Schnell laid down a perfect squeeze bunt for a run and I thought Evan was safe at first. With Heath Miller at the plate with the bases loaded and two out, he hit a ball to the centerfield gap which they ran down. A couple of runs there could have changed the outcome.”

Luke McCollough started the game and Dylan Miller finished. Cummins said, “Luke battled, and Dylan pitched well. He gave us a chance to come back. Overall, we played hard and the kids showed some heart as they competed against a good team. The ball just didn’t bounce our way. It’s always tough to see the seniors play their last game. They meant a lot to our program. They will be missed and hard to replace. It was a big step up this year from Division III to Division II. We seem to do well in even years, so I hope our luck holds out next year.”
