Last week the Islander Girls Lacrosse Team defeated Cathedral Catholic High School 17-7 and lost to Scripps Ranch 17-8. As is the case with the CHS Boys Lacrosse Team, Girls Lacrosse Head Coach Kirstyn Atkinson believes in playing a tough schedule. The current No. 1 seed in the CIF Open Division is Scripps Ranch, which like Coronado, is a member of the Western League.

Starting with the Cathedral game, the Islanders held a 10-4 lead at the half, and won the second half handily as well 7-3. Atkinson said of the contest, “I’ve told our Girls our biggest thing is to be consistent. It’s hard to beat a team twice in the same season and I am proud of the Girls for their consistency and working hard. Everybody participated in that game in some regard.”

Six Islanders scored against the Lady Dons, with Catie Ward leading the way with six tallies scored on seven shots on goal; Makena Armstrong scored three goals and was the team leader in groundballs recovered with three; Camden DeMaio scored three goals and added an assist; Allie White scored three times; and single goals came from Josie Morrissey and Ella Ackerly. Kendall Chapko was credited with 10 saves in goal.

As for Scripps Ranch, the teams played each other twice, and as Atkinson noted the Islanders improved last week compared to their April 19 game, won by the Falcons 14-1. “Scripps is super-fast, they have very athletic kids and a deep bench,” Atkinson said. “Midway through the first half last week, we were down by just three goals, and in the last 10 minutes of the half they blew it out.” The score was 8-4 in favor of Scripps Ranch at the half on the way to the 17-8 final. Scoring for Coronado was limited to just three players, with Ward leading the way with four goals, three were scored by Armstrong, and one by DeMaio. Assists went to Kat Green and Armstrong, with Green the team’s groundball leader with three. Chapko had 11 saves.

According to www.laxnumbers.com, which is the official lacrosse ranking service for the CIF San Diego Section, the Islanders are currently in the No. 7 slot in the Open Division. The current rankings include: No. 1 Scripps Ranch, No. 2 La Jolla, No. 3 San Marcos, No. 4 La Costa Canyon, No. 5 Torrey Pines, No. 6 Poway, No. 7 Coronado and No. 8 Canyon Crest Academy. This current lineup would mean Coronado would face La Jolla for the third time this season, in the Quarter-Finals of the Playoffs. The Open Division Playoffs will begin Saturday, May 11.

This week the Islanders conclude their regular season with a road game at Torrey Pines, which could have an impact on the final order of the playoff lineup.
