The Islanders women’s golf team was back in action this week for a bit of postseason play. And stop me if you have heard this before, but it was yet another wildly successful week for the girls in green and white.

Last Tuesday the Islanders took part in the annual San Diego City Conference Championship at Balboa Golf Course. In total there were 41 players in the starting field with schools from both the Eastern and Western leagues participating.

To start the first day the Islanders put on a strong showing with sophomore Bella Villarin leading the way with a seven-over 79 good enough for fourth overall in the field. Jasmine Lo would follow close behind with an 11-over 83. Rounding things out for Coronado was Mariella Avanni who finished at 16th with a 92, Natalia Avanni was 28th with a final round of 96 and freshman Malia Perry put up a round of 97.

So overall after the first day, half of the Islanders would advance to the day two match play stage of the tourney and earn the shot to play in the final four at Torrey Pines South.

In opening rounds of the match play format, it would be Villarin and Lo who would be the ones to advance to the quarterfinals with Villarin winning her match, being three holes up with just two to play and Lo winning her match, being two up with one to play.

In the final eight Lo would be defeated by Taylor Riley of Point Loma in a well-played contest.

As for Villarin she would defeat her opponent Brooke Kinnear of Cathedral Catholic after being two up with one hole to play.

In the final four, Villarin would ultimately end up placing third after falling to eventual champion Taylor Riley of Point Loma in the semifinals being four down with three holes to play. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful and gritty performance from the sophomore, who has performed as one of the best players in San Diego County in just her second season with the team.

With the City Conference Tournament now concluded, the Islanders still have a task at hand. This coming week the Islanders will go toe to toe in a three-team CIF Play in a match versus El Capitan and Oceanside. The playoff match will be held at the Coronado Municipal Golf course, with the winner claiming the No.3 overall seed in the CIF Division II Playoffs.
