Islander Golf Head Coach Stuart Gordon (he coaches both the Boys and the Girls Teams), passed along an anecdote from Senior Crista Izuzquiza, who last week won the City Conference Golf title for the second consecutive year. “We were driving up to the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo last week for the City Conference Finals and Crista said, ‘In two years I haven’t lost a hole in this tournament.’ Playing against No. 1 seed Ruhee Pandit, a junior from Scripps Ranch, Crista lost the first hole to a birdie by Pandit, and then got it back on the next hole. Eventually Crista won the last hole to win the title 1-up.”

The City Conference format calls for 60 golfers to play 18 holes of stroke play, with the Top 16 players advancing to match play. Gordon said, “In stroke play Crista shot a 77 and Mary Damian shot a 78, which were not their best scores. Crista was seeded No. 4 in match play and Mary was No. 8. Mary lost in the Quarter-Finals and she played well. Who really impressed me was our freshman Natalia Avanni who qualified for match play and lost 4-and-2 to the No. 1 seed. That bodes well for the future.”

Izuzquiza won her first three matches all by the score of 3-and-2 (a three hole lead with two holes left to play) before winning the Finals 1-up. The City Conference has held their post-season tournament with this format for three years, with a Coronado athlete the victor all three times. Izuzquiza has won it twice and three years ago Islander Kesar Patel won the title.

This week the Islanders launch into the CIF Division II Playoffs when they host Mar Vista, West Hills and Cathedral Catholic in a play-in event at Coronado Municipal. The Islanders are ranked No. 8 in the County and are heavily favored to advance. All six Coronado golfers including Izuzquiza, Damian, Natalia Avanni, her twin sister Mariella Avanni, Samantha Lorr and Annie Holland have already qualified for the CIF Finals by stroke average.
