In the Intermediate Division championship game played Wednesday May 26, Team Smith and Team Sandie faced off at Bradley Field. Pitcher Chase Jenkins smashed a 2-run homerun in the top of the third inning to put Team Sandie in the lead 3-1. Team Smith got a run back in the bottom of the third when Aidan Arendt singled to left driving in Jack O’Sullivan. Team Sandie relinquished their 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Team Smith scored 5 runs. Jenkins kept the game close with his second homerun, bringing Team Sandie to within two, 7 – 5. In the top of the sixth inning, Ozzie Smith came in to pitch for Team Smith, aiming to lock down the save and championship. In their half of the inning, Team Smith broke the game open with 5 runs on 4 hits making the final score 13 – 6.
In the AAA Division Team West defeated Team Craig to win the championship at Tidelands Park. Both AAA and Intermediate winners will advance to the Tournament of Champions, playing other league division winners at Mira Mesa Little League fields, starting June 3 for Intermediate and June 7 for AAA. In the Juniors Division (14 and 15-year-old), the Coronado team had a great season winning 10 of 16 games. They will also advance to the Tournament of Champions.
In the Intermediate Division Homerun Challenge, the title came down to the last games of the tournament. Trey Arnold hit two dingers in Monday’s semi-final game to win the crown with 9 homeruns. Gehrig Evans and Chase Jenkins tied for second with 8 bombs apiece and Ozzie Smith hit 7.
Congratulations to all of the boys and to Team Arnold who captured the team record with 17 homeruns hit during the season.
