Islander Athletic Director Robin Nixon dropped a line the other day to say the Coronado High School Top Senior Athletes for the 2019-20 school year had been selected. That list includes: Casey Harris-Cross Country and Lacrosse; Crista Izuzquiza-Golf; Elsa Ostermarker-Tennis; Raden Perry-Baseball; Kyle Phin-Baseball; Devin Schulte-Football and Lacrosse; Catherine Ward-Lacrosse; Lauren White-Basketball and Lacrosse; Abigail Whittemore-Soccer; James Witthoft-Football and Lacrosse.
Nixon added a couple of notes along with the list, including that White lettered in Golf her freshman and sophomore years and in Cross Country as a junior, which when combined with Basketball and Lacrosse comprise an exceptional prep athletic career. Whittemore also lettered in Track her freshman year and is represented in the Islander Track and Field record book as part of the 4x100 relay team which still holds the school record. The other relay team members included Ruthie Grant-Williams, Madison Shanks, and Alysah Hickey.
Her freshman year, Izuzquiza lettered on the Girls Tennis Team, before becoming one of the best golfers to ever compete for Coronado. Schulte had one of the more unique senior years in recent Islander history going before the arrival of the pandemic. After starring on the Lacrosse team for three years, Schulte decided try Football, a sport he had never played before. A star on both sides of the ball for the Islander Football Team, he was voted Team MVP last fall. If Schulte had not played football, two-way star Witthoft would have had an excellent chance to be named Football MVP. Congratulations to all of the Top Seniors, who will be honored by the Rotary Club of Coronado Wednesday during their video meeting.
