Another perplexing thing about prep sports in San Diego is the format of both the Boys and Girls Golf seasons. As an example, the Islander Girls just concluded their 20-match season with a record of 11-9 overall, played against the very top teams in the San Diego Section. Virtually all of those matches are team events played over nine holes. In Coronado’s case, starting with the City Conference Tournament, the first round is an 18-hole event, followed by match play. Although a great test of golf, it’s a totally different format than the rest of the season. As an aside, the Islanders were the eighth best team by stroke average in the San Diego Section.

The CIF Team play, where Coronado finished second in Division II behind Mater Dei, returns to the normal nine-hole team format. Then it’s onto the CIF Individuals, which feature the top 115 female golfers in the section, with 18-hole rounds Monday and Wednesday. Both days of competition, Monday and then again Wednesday, are scheduled to be held at the par-72 Admiral Baker Golf Course.

The Islanders’ scores from Monday’s play included Crista Izuzquiza with a four-over 76, Mary Damian shot a 77, Samantha Lorr shot an 86, Mariella Avanni shot a 91, Natalia Avanni shot a 96 and Annie Holland shot a 98. The good news for Islander Head Coach Stuart Gordon is only Izuzquiza graduates from this year’s varsity squad and the other five return next year. Monday’s scores will be combined with Wednesday’s for a two-day total. The top scores in the section will advance to the CIF Regionals.
