City League MVP ...

Wayne McKinney, shown here in the CIF Division III Semifinal game against Eastlake, was named Islander Basketball MVP at the team’s awards banquet over the weekend. McKinney was also named MVP of the City League and is a member of the 10-man All-CIF First Team, representing the best players in San Diego County.

The Islander Boys Basketball program held their awards banquet over the weekend, honoring both the Varsity and JV teams. First up was JV Head Coach Brian Turley who presented the following awards: Team Captains-Donny Couts, Will Haley and Tommy Pate; Most Improved Players-Darren Hopkins and Cameron Evans; Coach’s Award-Jake Finch; and Team MVP-Connor Little.

The Varsity Awards were presented by Head Coach JD Laaperi, who along with Assistant Coaches Sandy Dillon, Drew Zeller, Turley, and Andre Murphy guided the Islanders to a 21-11 (.656) record. The team was also the undefeated champions of the City League, and Runners-up in CIF Division III. The awards were presented to: Captains-Mike Cunningham, Donovan Campbell and Jake Hacker; ISF Award-Campbell; Most Improved-Ryan Hoyt and Kieran Ashley; Coaches’ Awards-Jack Westphal and Cunningham; and Team MVP-Wayne McKinney.

In addition, McKinney and Cunningham earned First Team All-City League Honors, with McKinney named City League MVP. McKinney was also named to the All-CIF First Team.
