On occasion, Coronado has produced great surfers, with a prime example being Taylor Jensen (CHS ’02) who was a two-time World Champion Longboarder. It seems that lo these many years later, the Islanders have assembled a fine longboard team, who have compiled a perfect 4-0 record in Division I, competing almost exclusively against larger schools. The final Division I Boys Longboard standings are: No. 1 Coronado, No. 2 Carlsbad, No. 3 Torrey Pines, No. 4 San Dieguito, No. 5 La Jolla and No. 6 Point Loma.

Coronado has qualified for the State Team competition April 13 and the State Individual competition April 15. The Islanders are the defending Boys Longboard Champions. The events will be held in Oceanside and approximately 20 teams from throughout the state will participate.

Islander team members include Captain Cole Quinlan, Co-Captain Liam Casey, Santi Girault and Sam Rahm. Another team member, and the highest-rated female longboarder in the region, is Sydney Zoehrer. The team is under the direction of Head Coach Mike Gillard. “Sydney was No. 1 in the final rankings,” Gillard noted. “Most of the Southern California schools have surf teams and she should be able to pursue the sport at the next level.”

Gillard added, “I’m real proud of these kids,” said Gillard, who volunteered to coach the team after the unfortunate passing of Stan Searfus. “In surfing competitions, you are dealing with the ocean and you have to continually make decisions on the fly. For these kids to be that consistent with the variable conditions they face is very impressive.”

Although most of the team is comprised of seniors, there is help on the way from a talented group of eight graders, including Shane Gillard, Mike’s son, who figure to keep the Islanders competitive. “My son is a really good surfer and he is the No. 1 rated longboarder in the middle school age group,” Gillard said. “And we have a whole group of kids coming up next year.”
