Last week was yet another big week filled with big wins for the Lady Islanders Golf team. Coming into this last week Coronado knew their matches would go a long way in defining their 2021 season, and with especially all three matches being against league opponents.
First up on the ledger for Coronado was Our Lady of Peace (OLP), a team Coronado had already beaten once this season. The match would take place at the friendly confines of Coronado Municipal Golf Course.
Leading the way for the Islanders last Monday was sophomore Ines Izuzquiza. Despite missing the previous match versus Scripps Ranch, the sophomore looked as sharp as she had all season as she carded her season-low with a one-under 35.
Right on her tail were fellow sophomores Bella Villarin and Jasmine Lo whom both fired off rounds of two-over 38. To finish off the round for Coronado freshman junior Mariella Avanni shot a 43 while junior Natalia Avanni and freshman Malia Perry shot 47 and 44, respectively.
With yet another crisp performance the Islanders easily took home the victory over OLP 198-230.
Though the Islanders would have little time to celebrate. The next day they welcomed in another league opponent to the Crown City as the Islanders took on the Dons of Cathedral Catholic. Much like OLP, Coronado had already taken down the Dons earlier in the season, and with the home-field advantage, Coronado would repeat their earlier success and defeat the Dons 211-227.
The medalist of the match was Villarin as she posted the low round of the day with a one-over 37. Other strong scores for the Islanders would come from Perry who shot a 43, and Mariella Avanni who shot 44.
With a 2-0 record so far for the week, there was just the Pointers of Point Loma left to take care of to complete the perfect 3-0 week.
Despite missing Izuzquiza for another match, Coronado would still have more than enough firepower to take care of Point Loma. Villarin would again lead the way as she shot a clean three-over 39, while Lo was right behind with a four-over 40. Rounding out the evening for the Islanders, Perry shot a 45, Mariella Avanni and Natalia Avanni each shot a 46.
In a week that the Islanders needed wins, they got all three and placed themselves in a good spot as they inch closer and closer to the postseason. The Islanders currently sit at 10-4, own an extremely impressive 6-1 record in league play, and most importantly, have a team differential of 27.12, putting them just outside the top 5 teams in San Diego county.
