Playing Strong In Goal ...

Teddy Oliver had two outstanding games last week, although the Islander Boys Water Polo Team lost both of their Western League contests. In Coronado’s game against Cathedral Catholic, Oliver had 20 saves and four steals in the 7-6 loss. Against La Jolla in an 8-6 loss, Oliver was great again with 10 saves, three steals and two assists. The Islanders will travel to the Bay Area later this week for a Thursday night game against The Menlo School. They will then compete in the prestigious NorCal Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Competition in the four-team Western League in the sport of water polo is always tough, with four of the strongest teams in the CIF San Diego Section playing each other twice during the conference season. Conference wins among Coronado, Cathedral Catholic, La Jolla and The Bishop’s School are always particularly sweet.

Last week the Islanders had two conference match-ups, which featured Cathedral on the road Tuesday and a home match with La Jolla Thursday. In the Cathedral game, Coronado lost 7-6 and against the Vikings, Coronado lost 8-6.

Islander Head Coach Sean Castillo said of the game with the Dons, “It was back and forth the whole time and both teams had the lead at one point. It came down to the wire. We had the ball with 32 seconds left and we had an opportunity to score. Cathedral finished with a nice defensive stand. The game was close to the last second. Calvin Peckham and Matthew Wastila had two goals each, Peter Olson and Max Ramey had one goal each. Teddy Oliver had 20 saves and four steals. The stats are indicative of Teddy’s performance.”

The La Jolla game followed a different story line, as Castillo recounted the details. “It was the opposite of the Cathedral game. We came out flat and were losing 4-1 at the end of the first quarter. Fernando Morales scored three goals, Wastila had two goals and Carlos Morales had one goal. Teddy had 10 saves, three steals and two assists.”

The regular season is winding down, with a few games remaining. Bishop’s plays at Coronado Tuesday at 3 p.m. Castillo said, “Thursday we fly to the Bay Area for the NorCal Invitational Tournament. We play the Menlo School Thursday night at 5 p.m. And the tournament starts Friday with the time and opponent still to be determined. We come back and play at La Jolla on Tuesday Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. We play at Bishop’s Halloween night at 4:45 p.m. Then Friday night we host Foothill for our last game of the regular season and that will be Senior Night at 5 p.m.”
