The Islander Girls Soccer Team had two City League games last week, both on the road, and they weren’t challenged in either contest. Coronado defeated High Tech San Diego 5-1 in a game played at Robb Field. Two nights later they defeated Hoover 4-0. Although the games weren’t close, the silver lining for Islander Head Coach Mike Costaglio was his entire roster got to play in both games.

“Our goals were scored by Julia Hinz, Ellie Searles, and Riley McGrath had three goals in just 56 minutes of play,” Costaglio said. (High school soccer games are played in two 40-minute halves.) Shelby Linde played the entire game in goal and she had six saves. Robb Field was brutal. You have to catch them when they’ve just cut the grass.”

Against Hoover, the game was similar in nature, and again the whole team received playing time. According to Costaglio, the Islander goals came from Hinz, McGrath, Ella Worthy and Amelia Hawley. Linde played a half and had one save, with Sydney Neibert playing the second half and she didn’t face any shots on goal. This was senior Julia Williams’ first game back from injury.”

Tuesday evening the Islanders will host University City. Costaglio said, “This is an important match and we’re both undefeated in league. It will be nice having Williams back for this game.” The UC game is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. Thursday evening Coronado will host Clairemont High, also at 5:15 p.m.
