The Islander Girls Basketball Team improved their record to 4-2 this season, with a road win at Sage Creek by the score of 47-45. Head Coach Toler Goodwin said, “I don’t think we played near our best in the first half. We had some problems with our defensive rotations. But we were able to stick around, hit some key shots and make some plays to secure the win. Janie Ruttert was solid with 20 points and eight rebounds. Lauren White had her best rebounding game of the year. She scored 13 points to go with 10 rebounds. Lauren had a good, solid game rebounding-wise and she hit some key shots. We need to do a better job getting her to attack the basket so she can get to the free throw line. Lauren works hard.”

The complete scoring line included Ruttert with 20; Lauren White with 13; Allison White with six; Courtney Williams with four; Gianna Spatafore with a basket and six rebounds; and Jenevieve Joseph with a basket. Goodwin added, “Gianna got two quick fouls in the first quarter and we played the first half mostly without her. That threw us a little bit off offensively. Gianna had six rebounds in the game and again she was active, got some steals, deflections and rebounds. She continues to work. Ella Ackerly rolled her ankle in practice and we played the game with seven players. We were rotating Courtney and Jenevieve in the lineup. Sage Creek is good. Their point guard scored 23 points and they have a 6-2 post player. Jenevieve and Courtney did a great job defensively on her. They made her earn anything she got, and they didn’t let her dominate the glass. They were boxing out and keeping her away from rebounds, which Lauren and Janie cleaned up.”

Goodwin described the final few moments of the game. “Lauren hit a three-pointer late in the fourth to put us up by four points. With 15 seconds to go, Janie made a free throw and missed the second one. We had an extra foul to give (before putting Sage Creek in the bonus) and Allie White took the foul with six seconds remaining. They had the ball on the baseline, and we did a really nice job defending the inbounds play. Allie got a deflection and she and Gianna went after it. It was a good team win. We played against a very decent squad. Sage Creek will give some people problems with a guard who can score and the big person who can go get the ball.”

This week the Islanders have their last home game until February 1st, when they host Escondido for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday. Thursday night they start a tournament with a game at Maranatha High School. Then depending on the results of the games, they will play one game Friday and two games Saturday, with the opponents and times to be determined.
