Islander Girls Basketball ...

Islander senior Lauren White recently passed the 1,000-point scoring mark for her career at Coronado High School. Last week White scored 31 total points in games against Castle Park and Mar Vista.

Last week the Islander Girls Basketball Team (15-9 overall, 2-2 in the City League) filled in a bye in their league schedule with a road game at Castle Park. The Islanders played into overtime before losing 50-44. Islander Head Coach Toler Goodwin said of the game, “We had two 11-point leads against Castle Park and lost both of them. We didn’t defend well in the fourth quarter and we had a lead in overtime. In the fourth quarter and overtime, we had 27 possessions and turned it over nine times. We played panicked. We shot the ball with less than two passes two-thirds of the time in the fourth quarter and overtime.”

Junior point guard Janie Ruttert had a fine all-around game with 16 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals; Lauren White added nine points, 12 rebounds and a steal; Gianna Spatafore accounted for six points,10 rebounds, three assists and two steals; Courtney Williams scored four points to go with four rebounds; Tamya Flenoy also added four points and four rebounds; Allison White had three points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals; Ella Ackerly had a point, three boards and two assists; and Jenevieve Joseph had one point, a rebound and one steal.

In another non-conference game Saturday night, the Islanders returned home after a 51-day road vigil and defeated Mar Vista High School 56-14. Goodwin said, “Against Mar Vista, things looked good because we were making shots. We were a little better defensively and we worked a little harder. Their 14 points came from scrambled loose balls they recovered and scored on.”

Lauren White led the game in scoring with 22 points to go with seven rebounds; Ruttert added 19 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and five steals; Flenoy had six points and two steals; Allison White added four points, four rebounds and an assist; Spatafore scored three points, and added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals; Joseph scored two points and had three rebounds, two assists and a steal; Katie Porter didn’t score but was credited with two assists and two steals.
