The Islander Girls Basketball Team played two games in the Los Angeles area last week and lost both. The flu bug which has swept through the team has continued to hang around, which didn’t help matters. Islander Head Coach Toler Goodwin said, “In the last two weeks, we had one practice because everybody has been sick. Even in that practice, everybody couldn’t participate. We played short-handed and we didn’t play great the whole weekend. We played so many games over so many days that we got worn down.”

Coronado’s first game was against the Eisenhower Eagles from Rialto, and the Islanders lost 69-49. Goodwin said his team had 14 turnovers in the first quarter and trailed 20-2 at the start of the game. Despite the slow start, the Islanders played the second half essentially even with the Eagles. In this game, Lauren White had 22 points and seven rebounds; Janie Ruttert added 16 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists; Tamya Flenoy had five points and one rebound; Courtney Williams had three points and six boards; Gianna Spatafore had three points and two rebounds; and Allison White chipped in with three rebounds and three steals.

In the game played Saturday, the Islanders lost to Claremont 45-40. “We should have beaten Claremont, but we turned the ball over three straight times coming down the stretch,” Goodwin said. “It was a back-and-forth game and we had chances to take the lead. With 1:30 to go, it was a one-point game.” For Coronado, Ruttert scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds; Allison White had eight points and two rebounds; Spatafore scored five points and had three rebounds; Williams had two points and six rebounds; Lauren White, had two points and three rebounds; and Jenevieve Joseph was credited with two rebounds.

If you would like to see the Islanders Girls Team play at home this month, you’re out of luck. They’re on the road for the entire month of January before returning home Feb. 1 for a non-conference game against Mar Vista. Then they play their final four league games at home. The team doesn’t play this week, but returns to the road Tuesday, Jan. 14 when they travel to San Diego High School for a 5 p.m. game. Friday, Jan. 17 the Islanders play at La Jolla at 6 p.m.
