Last week was a tough one for the Islander Boys Water Polo Team. It started with a 12-6 loss to Bishop’s at home. Three days later the team flew to the Bay Area to play The Menlo School Thursday night. Coronado lost the game to a team coached by former Islander alumnus, All-American Goalie and Stanford University grad Jack Bowen. The final score was 17-13.

Islander Head Coach Sean Castillo provided the scoring breakdown. “Calvin Peckham scored four goals; Harrison Bartell, Mathew Wastila and Carolos Morales scored twice each and single goals were scored by Peter Olson, Trevor Wilson, and Cole Stanley. Teddy Oliver was in goal and had 12 saves and one steal. Even though we went 1-4 on the trip, there were a lot of good things happening. It’s just hard for us to put a whole game together.”

The NorCal Invitational began Friday with Coronado playing Miramonte and the Islanders were on the short side of the 11-2 final score. Castillo said, “The game was tied 1-1 at the half and Teddy Oliver was playing lights out. It was the first game of the tournament and they are a really strong team. They wound up finishing in third place. We can play with anyone.” Peckham and Wastila each had a goal, and Oliver accounted for 10 saves and a steal.

The second game was against San Ramon Valley, and the Islanders lost 15-9. Wastila took the scoring honors for Coronado with three goals, Max Ramey scored twice, and single goals came from Peckham, Stanley, and Bartell. “We let Teddy Oliver play in the field, and he scored a goal,” Castillo said. “He got in there, drew an ejection on the first play and scored on the six-on-five opportunity. He also had 10 saves and a steal.”

Saturday morning, Coronado played Jesuit and won 12-5. “We were down 4-2 at the end of the first quarter,” Castillo recalled. “And then we stepped it up. In the second quarter we outscored them 4-0, it was 1-1 in the third and we won the fourth quarter 5-0. It was a slow start, but we pieced it together at the end. Olson and Peckham scored three goals each, Carlos Morales and Tyler Wilson had 2 each and single goals came from Ramey and Bartell. Teddy had five saves and three steals.”

The last game was a 15-5 loss to Vista. Castillo said, “Noah Luebbert played the whole game in goal and he had seven saves. Our goals included two each from Peckham and Carlos Morales and Tyler Wilson had one. Vista is probably the No. 3 seed in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division. We’re in the No. 7-8 range.” This week the Islanders play at La Jolla Tuesday, at Bishop’s Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and at home Friday night at 5 p.m. against Foothill.
