The Islander Boys Basketball season got off to an unusual start, as it was reported in a couple of media outlets the team lost a game to Olympian High School last week. It was unusual in the respect the teams weren’t scheduled to play and didn’t. Instead the Islanders, under the direction of Head Coach JD Laaperi practiced for their two games this week, both on the road.

Monday night they played and lost to Poway, the No. 7 ranked team in the CIF San Diego Section 70-56 in the West Hills Tournament, which ironically is being played at Poway and Mt. Carmel High Schools. Due to publication deadlines, the details of the Poway game will be reported next week. Wednesday night at 6 p.m. the Islanders will play at Mt. Carmel.

When asked about the unusual scheduling situation, Laaperi laughed and replied, “It’s all right. Next week we get to host two games.” Monday Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. Coronado will host Orange Glen; Wednesday, Dec. 4, the Islanders will host Serra at 7 p.m. and in non-tournament action, Friday, Dec. 6 Mar Vista will play at Coronado at 6:30 p.m.

Going into this week’s games, Laaperi said of his team, “We had a good week of practice. After the scrimmage last week, that gave us a focus for a practice plan for this week. Boxing out and rebounding are the top priority. The tough thing is we haven’t seen Poway as this is their first game and they’re supposed to be pretty good.”
