Last week the Islander Boys Basketball Team knew they were facing a large task, literally, when they played at Poway High School to open their season. Coronado lost 70-56, as Islander Head Coach JD Laaperi explained. “They’re big. They didn’t start their 6-10 kid, but they did start a couple of 6-8 kids. When it was time for a break, they brought in the 6-10 kid and a 6-7 kid. It was a tall mountain to climb. For us, Wayne McKinney had 23 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. He filled out the stat sheet. Mike Cunningham had 12 points and five rebounds. We were down 14-4 but closed to 21-20. Then Poway went on a 6-0 run to end the half. We thought we were right there, and the kids were feeling good at halftime. Then they got us 19-11 in the third quarter.”

The second game of the week was at Mt. Carmel, a game which Laaperi thought his team could have won. “That one was the tale of the third quarter really. They had a scoring stretch out of nowhere and hit four straight three-pointers, including one at the third quarter buzzer from the top of the arc. We played without Wayne, who had a family commitment. Two statistics from our games that have been red flags are we’re only rebounding 60 percent of our possible defensive rebounds. And second, we’ve given up 38 transition points in two games, which is a lot in high school. We’re just not taking care of business on the glass. That was a bad loss to Mt. Carmel. If a team outplays us or is better than us, that’s one thing. But our boxing out and not getting back on defense are effort plays, which is what gets a coach frustrated. We play Mt. Carmel again in two weeks. We have to compete for 32 minutes and not pick and choose when we play.

This week the Islanders are scheduled to host Orange Glen Monday night at 7 p.m., they host Serra Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and they host Mar Vista Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
