The Coronado High School Baseball team hosted the Serra High Conquistadors Monday afternoon, May 24, in a tight, very well played ball game. Tony Miley looked sharp on the mound in what turned out to be a true pitcher’s duel. Neither offense could score through the first four innings as Miley had great command of all his pitches. In the top of the fifth, Serra had runners at second and third with one out, when Miley struck out the next two batters with curveballs. In the Islander half of the fifth, Dylan Noble led off with a base on balls. Tommy Dull moved him over with a sacrifice bunt and Brady Roulier drove Noble in with a sharp grounder up the middle. In the top of the sixth with Serra threatening again, Tommy Pate made a sliding grab of a fly ball to short left to preserve the one run lead.
Cole Hutcherson led off the sixth inning with a double to right center then took third on a passed ball. Toby Brown drew a walk and stole second putting the pressure on Serra. Noble hit a line drive single to left that scored Hutcherson with Brown being called out at home on a bang-bang play. Coronado took the 2-0 lead into the seventh inning where Miley promptly struck out the first two batters. The Conquistadors were not giving up the battle and preceded to load the bases. Caden Sutherland came on in relief as the suspense mounted. Sutherland struck out the last batter for the save and Coronado held on for the win.
On Wednesday, Coronado traveled to Serra with freshman Max Murray on the mound for the Islanders. The Islanders jumped out to an 8 – 0 advantage only to have Serra come back with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Coronado score 6 runs of their own in the seventh to win the game 14 – 6. The following day Coronado completed the three-game sweep with an 8 – 5 victory.
This week the team closes out the regular season with three games against Clairemont.
