Ines Izuzquiza ...

Ines Izuzquiza shot an even par 36 to lead the Islanders to victory over Poway High School.

It was a bounce back week for the Islanders Girls Golf team this week. After two close losses last week at the hands of a very talented Rancho Bernardo team, the Islanders turned their attention this week to Poway High School.

For the first match-up versus Poway, the Islanders would be playing at their home course here at Coronado Municipal. It was clear right from the start that the home course was playing to the Islanders advantage.

The lowest score on the day would come from Ines Izuzquiza, who would shoot an even par 36 on the day. An incredibly impressive performance from the talented sophomore. The second lowest score on the day would come from Bella Villarin, as the sophomore shot at five over, a 41. Rounding out the day for the Islanders twins and Islander co-captains Mariella Avanni and Natalia Avanni would both post a score of 46 and Jasmine Lo would shoot a six over at 42. The team combined to shoot a 211 and take home the victory over Poway.

With their first win of the season under their belt, and perhaps some more confidence, the Islanders then traveled to Rancho Bernardo Country Club looking to pick up a second straight win over Poway. The front nine at Rancho Bernardo Country club is a par 36 that plays 2,760 yards from the red tee’s with a 214 slope.

For the second straight match up Izuzquiza would again post the lowest score for the Islanders with a 38. However her fellow sophomores Villarin and Lo would also post strong rounds of 39 and 40, respectively. While Mariella Avanni and Natalia Avanni would post rounds of 46 and 47. Finally Freshman Malia Perry would shoot a 54 to round out the day for the Islanders. The scores would give the Islanders a total of 210, the lowest team total on the season and giving them a commanding 210-254 win over Poway.

Two straight wins for a team that is young like these Islanders is huge and is certainly a building block that they can use for confidence moving forward.

The ladies will return to the links this week and look to keep their winning streak going for the start of league play as they will take on Olympia on Aug. 31 (score unavailable at press time), and then La Jolla on Sept. 1. Then they’ll find themselves again at home taking on Torrey Pines on Sept. 2.
