It’s always a great day to be an Islander. But for the Islanders Women Golf team, it was a great week to be an Islander, as the team cruised to a perfect 3-0 week that has spring boarded Coronado to an impressive 5-2 record early in the season.
To start the week the Islanders hosted Our Lady of Peace, or as they are more often referred to as OLP, at Coronado Municipal Golf Course. Leading the way for the Islanders for their Tuesday match would be Ines Izuzquiza as she posted a team-low one over par 37.
Only a stroke behind was Sophomore Bella Villarin who would also post an impressively low two over 38. The posting of low scores from Izuzquiza and Villarin has become somewhat of a norm, as both have regularly shot in the high 30’s, providing a push for the team scoring. Jasmine Lo and Natalia Avanni would also post impressive scores both posted rounds of 42 respectively. To round out the match Mariella Avanni and Malia Perry would both shoot a solid round of 46, with Perry posting here season low.
With everyone on the team shooting well Coronado claimed the victory over OLP 206-242.
For the second match of the week, Coronado would travel to the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course to do battle vs. La Jolla. The host of multiple US Open’s and having been walked by many of golf’s greatest players, it was poised to be on the most challenging courses the Islanders would play at this season with a course rating of 75.8 and an intimidating slope of 134.
But it was clear that the ladies would not flinch. Izuzquiza and Villarin would both go low yet again as they fired off rounds of 38 & 39 respectively, good enough for two and three over par. The Avanni twins would post scores of 51 and 45, while Jasmine Lo and Perry would shoot rounds of 46. The Islanders won the match via a forfeit, but non the less would post an impressive team score of 214.
For the Islander’s final match of the week, they would be tested yet again. Not by a difficult course, but by an incredibly talented Torrey Pines. The current open division champions came to Coronado for a showdown that certainly lived up to the hype. It was again Izuzquiza who shot the team’s lowest score as she posted an even-par 36. The second even-par round she has shot this season. Right behind her was Villarin as she fired an impressive one-over par 38. Lo would post a round of 44 while Natalia Avanni and Malia Perry would both post rounds of 47 with Mariella Avanni shooting a 52.
The great team effort would help give the Islanders the massive 212-215 win over the reigning champion Falcons. A statement win if you would.
For the Islander Women’s Golf team this upcoming week will be a lighter load, as their only match this week will come vs. Cathedral Catholic this Thursday September 9.
Right now, the Islanders are doing everything right. With five straight wins now, the only question is, who will stop these young and hungry Islanders?
