Components of the CHS Blumenthal Sports Complex have been upgraded since the conclusion of the past school year, which prompted Islander Athletic Director Robin Nixon to create the idea of having an Athletic Department Open House Friday, Aug. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will be free to the public, and there will be no admission charges to the Islander Football game which kicks off at 7 p.m. that night.

The most obvious improvement, if for no other reason than its size, is the football field itself, which now features a completely new artificial turf installation. The running track around the field has also been cleaned and re-striped. The new artificial turf comes complete with new field markings for soccer and lacrosse. Less obvious but perhaps more importantly, the gymnasium roof has been repaired, which should stop the spate of basketball games postponed due to rain that have occurred over the past couple of seasons.

The school’s new weight room is worth seeing and the training room, an important element in prep sports, now includes new equipment purchased for the school by the Islander Sports Foundation. “A lot of people have never been in the gym,” Nixon said. “It’s a good opportunity for people to just roam around, see the championship banners and the facilities we have. There is also a Girls Volleyball match that day against Helix and the varsity will start around 5 p.m. We aren’t charging admission for the Open House, we’re just asking for donations.”
