Saturday at 6:30 p.m., the Islander Boys Lacrosse Team met their counterparts from Santa Fe Christian at Coronado’s Niedermeyer Field and what followed was a defensive struggle between two evenly matched teams. Coronado entered the CIF Open Division Playoff game as the No. 4 seed and the Eagles were the No. 5 seed.

The Islanders spotted the Eagles four goals to start the game. It wasn’t until 53 seconds remained in the first quarter that Andrew Bell scored for Coronado. Santa Fe Christian’s main offensive approach was to slow the game down and the second quarter reflected that concept. The Eagles didn’t score, and the lone Coronado goal came from Devin Schulte just 48 seconds into the quarter. The score was 4-2 in favor of the Eagles at the half.

Coronado found momentum to open the second half, on goals from Casey Harris and six minutes later a second tally from Schulte. As the action concluded in the third quarter, the defensive intensity from both teams really picked up. Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, Santa Fe Christian scored to take a 5-4 lead. No goals were scored until 37 seconds remained in regulation and Miguel Serrano scored for Coronado to make it 5-5. However, the Eagles scored the game winning goal with just 10.5 seconds remaining in the contest.

Islander Head Coach Alex Cade said, “It’s always tough to lose and we were all disappointed. But if you look at the broader context of the whole thing, we played well. We outplayed them in every statistical category including groundballs recovered (26-17), shots on goal (32-20), clears (21-17), saves, face-off wins (8-5), and turnovers. But we only converted 15 percent of our shots (5-32) and usually we shoot around 33 percent. If we were shooting well, we’re scoring 11 goals. We had enough shots to win, but we weren’t connecting. And it was our poorest shooting game of the year. It’s hard to win every category of the game and lose. The other team played well, but I thought we played well too. Sometimes the statistics don’t matter.”

Goalie Joe Walsh was credited with eight saves in the game. A special thanks to Mike Bell for providing game stats this season for the Boys Lacrosse Team.

Cade continued and provided an overview of the season. “I was actually quite proud of the Boys this year. The reality is we only had three guys on the team this year, who played significant varsity minutes last year and unfortunately, one of them, George Farley a senior captain and defensive contributor, got hurt three games into the season. To earn the No. 4 seed in the CIF Open Division is hard to do. We lose three seniors Andrew Bell, Joe Walsh and Luke Sandie, who played significant minutes this year. At the beginning of the season, some said we should schedule down and competing for a Division I title would be great. But I had faith in the team. We had injuries, were young and we still got the No. 4 seed. I’m real proud of the team, and we had a great year. I just wish it had ended on a better note.”
