United Through Reading is celebrating its 30th birthday from July 2019 through July 2020. The San Diego based nonprofit was founded July 5, 1989, and connects military families through the read aloud experience.

United Through Reading began making video recordings of Sailors and Marines reading stories to their children at the 32nd Street Naval Base in San Diego and now UTR supports every military branch around the world through an innovative multichannel delivery program including 200 locations around the world, the San Diego based Mobile Story Station, and a new cloud-based United Through Reading App. Since 1989 they have served over 2.4 million military family members.

“We are overjoyed to celebrate our 30th birthday this year and grateful to everyone who supported us along the way! We are honored to serve our military families every day and help them stay connected during times of separation through the power of story time,” said Dr. Sally Ann Zoll, CEO of United Through Reading and Coronado resident.

Highlights from the last 30 years include having First Lady Laura Bush as the Honorary Chair of our Military Program, being featured on Oprah, and being part of the Joining Forces initiative founded by First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden. They’ve also received a number of awards over the years including the Community Service Hero Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, the American Prize of the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program, Guidestar Platinum ratings in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and top rated military charity by Charity Navigator.

Coronado is also home to United Through Reading Board Trustee, VADM Jim Zortman and founder, Betty Mohlenbrock.

United Through Reading will celebrate their 30th birthday at their 11th Annual Storybook Ball on Nov. 2 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego.
