Refresh Your Driving Skills with a Smart Driver Course
On Tuesdays, Sept. 10 and 17 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., the AARP Smart Driver course, the nation’s first refresher course specifically designed for drivers age 50 and older, will be held at the John D. Spreckels Center. This course teaches evidence-based strategies and proven driving techniques to keep drivers safe behind the wheel. It is recognized as an approved Mature Driver Improvement Course for an automobile insurance premium reduction by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Drivers age 55 and older may be eligible for an appropriate reduction in automobile insurance premium charges after completing this course. Please check with your insurance company or agent prior to taking this course for any additional requirements for eligibility. Refresh your driving skills and your knowledge of the rules of the road to reduce your chance of receiving a traffic violation or getting into an accident.

This Smart Driver course covers information on the effects of medication on driving, preventive measures to reduce driver distractions, proper use of safety belts, air bags, anti-lock brakes, and new technology found in cars today. It also covers state-specific rules and regulations in 19 key areas including: construction zones, child safety seats, school buses, cellphone use, and more. This informative course is taught by an AARP certified instructor in an easy-to-follow format incorporating adult-learning principles.

Attendance at both sessions is required. The fee is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members, payable directly to AARP via cash or check on the first day of class. Call now to reserve your seat as classroom spaces are limited to optimize learning.
