Serge Dedina To Address Coronado Roundtable

The Coronado Roundtable will host guest speaker Serge Dedina, co-founder and executive director of WILDCOAST and City of Imperial Beach mayor. Dedina will discuss “Preserving the Coastal and Marine Ecosystems of San Diego,” on Friday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m. in the Winn Room at the Coronado Public Library, 640 Orange Avenue.

Dedina will offer a review of conservation efforts to protect and restore the world-class aquatic ecosystems of San Diego County which includes over 17,000 acres of marine protected areas as well as the wetland reserve of San Diego Bay and the Tijuana Estuary. This will include a discussion of a new effort to use wetlands and seagrass to sequester carbon to help combat climate change.

WILDCOAST is an international conservation team that conserves coastal and marine ecosystems and wildlife. Dedina received the Surf Industry’s Environmental Award, San Diego Zoological Society’s Conservation Medal as well as the California Coastal Commission’s “Coastal Hero” Award in recognition of his conservation achievements. He was named a UCSD John Muir Fellow in 2013 and was honored as a 2016 Peter Benchley “Hero of the Sea.”

Dedina grew up in Imperial Beach, California, and spent his childhood helping to preserve the Tijuana Estuary as a National Wildlife Refuge. He has a B.A. in Political Science, University of California, San Diego; M.S. in Geography, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Ph.D. in Geography, University of Texas at Austin. Dedina has served as Mayor of Imperial Beach since 2014.
