Coronado High School (CHS) graduate and former athlete Robin Nixon has been named the CIF San Diego Section Athletic Director of the Year.

As a 1980 graduate of CHS, Nixon played softball, volleyball, and basketball before heading to UC Davis, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in managerial economics. She later attended San Diego State, where she earned her teaching certificate before coming back to Coronado to teach PE and health for 14 years before being named Athletic Director in 2009.

If the last name “Nixon” seems familiar, dad Ron Nixon coached golf, basketball and softball at CHS, brother Randy was a nationally ranked tennis player, and nephew Curtis and nieces Ellie and Trudie lettered in multiple CHS sports, including soccer, basketball, and softball. While Nixon has seen thousands of athletes in her 10 years as athletic director, she maintains that her family members are of course her favorites.

I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the sidelines and hundreds of games with Nixon over the years, and her unwavering support and enthusiasm for our athletes is unparalleled. While the game schedules are up to the coaches, Nixon’s many behind-the-scene duties include the scheduling of sports facilities, representing CHS in conference and CIF meetings, and serving as a liaison between the high school, athletes, and coaches. Nixon also acts as liaison with the Islander Sports Foundation, which is crucial in helping fund CHS and Coronado Middle School athletics.

While Nixon has watched hundreds, perhaps thousands of CHS sporting events, a few moments are standouts for her, including the men’s 2009 first-ever lacrosse championship, CIF Water Polo Championships in 2011 and 2017, and our long-time rivalry with Point Loma basketball. She also noted that she and former principal Jenny Moore had the uncanny ability to predict rain, as the two of them attending the same sporting event almost invariably resulted in a downpour.
Moore also noted that Nixon cares deeply about the people - staff and students and families – and the facilities that serve our athletes and their coaches. She works more hours than any other Islander I know to make sure that our programs and opportunities are the very best we can offer kids.
