The Coronado Historical Association is proud to support The Camp Pendleton Historical Society’s Historical Essay Contest for undergraduate students enrolled in San Diego County colleges and universities. The awarded prizes of $1,000 for first place and $500 for second place.
Interested applicants should submit a letter application for entry into the contest. The letter should contain the student’s name, address, college/university name, essay topic of interest, and tentative title of the essay. This letter application must be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org and received no later than Dec. 31, 2020 to be eligible for the contest.
The essay must be submitted (as an attachment) via email (email@example.com) no later than May 31, 2021. The essay should be limited to 5,000 words (not including graphic captions, numbered end notes, and bibliography). The essay scope is limited to the history of the land now known as Camp Pendleton. This includes the pre-history (archeology) of the land, its native American occupants, the Spanish exploration and mission era, the rancho era, and the history of the Camp as a significant cultural and economic institution in San Diego County since 1942. Not included in the essay scope is the history of any military units (Marine Corps, Navy, Army, others) based at Camp Pendleton.
