A Coronado Summer tradition continues for the 48th consecutive year when the Optimist Club of Coronado’s Sports Fiesta gets underway next Saturday, July 27, at Sunset Park.

You can be part of history by participating in the world’s longest continuously running triathlon. It’s a short course, fitting for all skill levels. The competition begins at Coronado’s North Beach near the main lifeguard tower at 7a.m. with a 400-yard ocean swim. The swimmers leave the water for a mile-long run on the beach followed by a 4-mile bike race on Naval Air Station North Island.

For the more competitive, there is a 5K run that begins at 9 a.m. at Sunset Park. Check-in begins at 7 a.m. and continues until 8:45 a.m. The fast, flat course is on Naval Station North Island. The field is limited to the first 300 entrants.

And, for the competitive swimmer, there is a 1-mile rough water swim, also at North Beach. It begins at 10 a.m. Check in is from 9 to 9:45 a.m. “Day of” entries are accepted, but the field is limited to the first 100, so to guarantee your spot, its best to enter early online.

Awards are given to the top three finishers in each race, in each gender and age category. The top three male and female finishers to complete the mini-triathlon and the 5K and the 1-mile rough water swim earn the coveted Hard Rock Award in ceremonies following the races.

There are a few spaces remaining in the popular Beach Volleyball tournament field. The field has grown from 16 to 24 teams this year. The competition is on North Beach beginning at 9 a.m.

There will also be a Lawn Bowling tournament at Spreckels Center next to the Coronado Public Library beginning at 1 p.m. A few spots for entries remain.

Entry fees may be the most reasonable in the triathlon world, and there’s a significant discount for youth. For adults, the Triathlon, Rough Water Swim and 5K cost $35 per event. The triathlon counts as 1 event. Those fees rise to $45 on the day of the races. For those younger than 19 years old, the cost is $10 per event or $15 if you sign up the day of the race.

Funds raised support nearly 50 youth activities in Coronado, from Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to athletic teams at the middle school and high school as well as academic activities at Coronado schools.
