Last week on C Avenue there was music in the air; opera music to be precise.

Wendy Sanger McGuire and Dev Purkayastha, with an assist from Blossom Sanger, hosted a soirée in their home to support Opera NEO. Entertainment featured Anna-Lisa Hackett, soprano, Kelly Hart, soprano, Bernardo Bermudez, tenor, and Ted Allen Pickell, baritone, singing selections from Verdi, Puccini, Rachmaninoff, Mozart and Strauss operas in the living room, followed by dinner and a mingle with the singers. Food was provided by Smoke N Aces and Coronado’s Gluten Free Pantry.

In attendance were Ileana and Andy Rubio, Paul Marshall, Drs. Chris and Asha Devereaux, Frank and Alma Kostenko and family, Roanna and Ken Canete and family, Shabnam and Gopal Miglani, Jeff Dunigan, Dr. Jay Merritt, Kate Adams, Robert Sulens, Ilda Diaz and Roberto Salinas, Dena DeLucia, Charlie and Connie Pincus, Genevieve Butenshon, and Blossom Sanger. Between those in attendance and other generous donations received, the total raised in support of Opera NEO was approximately $15,000.

Opera NEO is a unique cultural venture in San Diego, creating performance opportunities for young opera singers to prepare and inspire them to perform at the highest level. Every year, singers from all over the country apply to participate in Opera NEO workshops in San Diego, including master classes, voice lessons, career seminars, movement classes, and career guidance. The workshops culminate in performances of three operas, including one baroque opera, with music performed by a world class symphony led by renowned conductors.

Why Opera NEO? McGuire said, “This unique marriage of music and education not only elevates opera and keeps it young and alive, it gives the audience here in San Diego a wonderful, accessible, inexpensive, extremely high quality performance. My father loved having salon-type musical performances at home. When we looked at having this event, we realized how many people we knew who had ties to opera in some way, some simply just loved music, and we knew that this was a great way to have a great evening of fun, food, friends and music in support of this worthy organization. My father would have been especially happy to see the kids there, some hearing opera for the first time. I encourage everyone to attend the Opera NEO performances in August.”

How can you help? Opera NEO operates on a very modest budget, made possible by supporters contributing many ways. Musicians and singing artists need places to stay during the workshop, so you can lend a room (no food necessary) for two to five weeks to an artist. This would be great for a CoSA (Coronado School of the Arts) family who want their child to be exposed to different kinds of music and singing. Do you have an extra car free during July/August? If you can lend it to Opera NEO, a licensed, insured adult can use it to carpool to rehearsals, saving the cost of car rental. Would you like to host a soirée? Or would you like to make a donation? Please contact Peter Kozma at peter@operaneo.com or www.operaneo.com . We’ll see you in August at the Opera!
