To another Roundtable full house, Harold Rapoza, Jr., General Manager of the Hotel del Coronado, addressed the hotel’s ongoing renovations by recognizing last year’s 130th anniversary and indicated the goal of the renovation is to keep the hotel alive for another 130 years. He said the three-year plan involves extensive renovation while ensuring the hotel remains a well-loved guest destination.

Accompanied by Kathy Breedlove, the hotel’s Masterplan Communications Director, they tagged teamed addressing the hotel’s history, renovation plans, and the future of the hotel. Breedlove explained how the hotel grew to where it is today highlighting the hotel’s renovations every 7-10 years since 1888; adding rooms and meeting space, and ensuring the hotel represented the latest in hospitality services. To audience’s surprise and laughter, she also indicated the hotel was built in only eleven months!

Rapoza went on to describe the extensive renovations being accomplished in two phases. Underway now is the redesign of the hotel’s north side focusing on adding three levels of parking, two of which will be underground. Also, the new fine dining restaurant “Serea,” with coastal cuisine, will open in about one month. An interim main entrance will also be added on the north side with north side construction being completed by November of this year.

Once the north side is complete, construction will shift to the south side, along Orange Avenue and Avenida del Sol. This phase of the renovation will be significant, touching every part of the resort. Plans include a new approach from Avenida del Sol to the hotel’s entrance, at its current location; a main entrance with flanking porches including rocking chairs reminiscent of the hotel’s original design; and a major redesign of the hotel’s pool and sun terrace area which improves accessibility, views, and available services. The pool and sun terrace renovation will begin after Labor Day and be complete in about one year. Additionally, new guest rooms, a conference center, and meeting rooms will be added, building out the beach front to Avenida del Sol and preserving, yet repurposing, the buildings in the current “industrial area” along Orange Avenue.

When asked if the hotel would continue its relationship with the Coronado Rotary Club, Rapoza said the partnership is valued and would be retained.

Next up for the Coronado Roundtable is Sue Gillingham, Executive Director of the Coronado Chamber of Commerce who will address the changes taking place within Coronado’s business community. Gillingham will speak to the Roundtable on June 28 in the Winn Room of the Coronado Library at 10 a.m. The public is welcome to attend.
