Local Junior Girl Scout Troop 6136 knows how to get things done. Though the girls are young, fifth graders, they are passionate about using their time and energy to give back to others.

I recently had the opportunity to chat with three long-time Girl Scout members, Kate Bennett, Amanda Nurding, and Sydney Taylor about their recent fundraising effort, Passion With Compassion.

While technically the event is a fashion show, it’s less about the fashion and more about raising funds for S.H.A.R.E—Share Her Annual Real Expense. S.H.A.R.E helps girls who might not otherwise be able to afford their annual dues, allowing them to participate in Girl Scouts.

What makes this event unique is that each participant selects one of their own slightly outgrown outfits, models it on the “runway,” in this case, the stage at Coronado Middle School’s Granger Hall, and then donates it to the San Diego Rescue Mission.
Several guest judges also volunteered their time and expertise, Miss Teen Malibu 2019 Zoe Hunt, Barbie designer Katiana Jiminez, Carol Deidrich and former New York fashion model Nan Sandhaus all participated, judging each outfit in categories such as Most Sporty, Best Accessories, and Most Formal. Sara Stillman, teacher at Christ Church, served as MC of the event.

The troop participates in charitable endeavors year-round, including welcoming veterans returning from Honor Flights and creating Butterfly Effect Gardens, which are currently at Village Elementary, Silver Strand Elementary, and Christ Church Day School. Local to the San Diego troops is also Operation Thin Mint, which allows the public to donate money to provide one of America’s favorite cookies to our troops overseas.
