Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is a forty-five letter word used by the president of the National Puzzlers’ League in 1935. It is a synonym for silicosis, a lung disease, which is caused by small particles of silica volcanic dust entering the lungs. It is the longest word published in the Oxford English Dictionary.

The largest known rummage sale in Coronado is the Annual FOCUS (Friends of Children United Society) Rummage Sale. This colossal sale of used items will be held at the Grand Caribe Hall in the Coronado Cays, 505 Grand Caribe Causeway, on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Thousands of items from surfboards (two at the time of this publication) to home decorator items will be sold to benefit homeless, battered, abused, and children in need within San Diego County. Books, framed and unframed paintings, as well as tables ladened with gently used clothing for toddlers and children of all ages will be for sale.

All monies raised by this event will be used to fund programs which support children throughout San Diego County. FOCUS recently delivered over 400 back-to-school backpacks filled with school supplies to eight San Diego agencies to distribute to boys and girls of limited means and who were beginning a new school year.

All items leftover from the rummage sale will be given to other charitable organizations.  Donations will be accepted at the Grand Caribe Hall on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., as well as on Friday, Aug. 16, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. All other inquiries can be addressed by calling Roger Clapp at 619-437-6811.
