On Oct. 1, 2020, the Coronado Lion’s Club is kicking off their “20/20 Project” to help those that do not have 20-20 vision. The Club is asking residents to donate prescription eye glasses they no longer use , so the eyeglasses can be repurposed for those who are unable to afford these important life navigating essentials.

Each October, the Coronado Lions Club hosts a “White Cane weekend” to raise funds for the Lions Club’s many humanitarian efforts assisting those in need in the United States and Internationally, as well as efforts to assist those who are blind or sight impaired. Because of COVID-19, the Club will not be doing the traditional in person fundraising booths around Coronado sharing information about the Club’s support for guide dogs, the San Diego Center for the Blind and the Lions Optometric Vision Center but instead will be coordinating efforts to collect 1000 pairs of eyeglasses before Dec. 31, 2020.

Donated eyeglasses are cleaned and distributed to those in need in three ways: first at local Lion’s Clubs eyeglass fairs around San Diego County, second, through the San Diego Lions Optometric Vision Center , and third, internationally during Lion’s Clubs humanitarian outreach trips, to bring optometric services to communities in need. Eyeglasses and cases may be donated by placing them inside the big yellow Coronado Lion’s Club eyeglass bin on the sidewalk in front of the Coronado Post Office, 1320 Ynez Pl, Coronado, CA 92118 or dropping them off at Coronado ophthalmologist, Optometrist, and medical offices, that have the Lion’s Club small cardboard collection boxes, on your next appointment. Businesses wishing to join the 20/20 project by requesting a small eyeglass collection box can call Bill Plunkett at 619-884-3811.

The Coronado Club had masks made for members’ safety when participating in the 20/20 Project. The Lions Club masks are available for purchase for $10 to support the Coronado Lion’s Club many philanthropic efforts. Anyone interested in purchasing a mask to support the Lions Club or helping to collect, clean and transport eyeglasses can email CoronadoLionsClub@gmail.com. More information is also available on the Coronado Lions Club Facebook Page.
